Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

There are not too many foods that are more American than hamburgers. There are many toppings that are generally used on top of your burgers. However, I am very partial to simple items. My favorite is the Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers. For many of us, there is nothing that comes close to the taste of slightly crispy, savory fried onions on top of a seasoned Beef Patty.

Zesty Pickles, melted Cheese and you have a simple, flavorful burger that is going to outshine all the fad burgers that come out.

This Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger takes simplicity to another level and makes it a favorite all over again.

The Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger is simple enough to make, savory, hearty and more than delicious.

Why do I love this homemade burger recipe?

It is simple, tasty, easy to make and has been around for years and will always remain as a favorite. You can add the toppings you choose to or leave it simple

WW-Friendly Cheeseburger

Ingredients:

  • 1½ lb. lean ground beef (93% lean or leaner)
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp light butter
  • 5 light hamburger buns
  • 5 slices reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, or other low-point toppings of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the onions: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the light butter and sliced onions. Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized.
  2. Prepare the beef: Place the ground beef in a bowl. Add garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and divide into 5 equal portions. Shape each portion into a burger patty.
  3. Cook the burgers: Heat a non-stick skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  4. Add the cheese: Place one slice of reduced-fat cheddar on each burger during the last minute of cooking. Cover the pan briefly so the cheese melts.
  5. Toast the buns: Lightly toast the hamburger buns in the same pan or on the grill.
  6. Assemble: Place each burger on a bun and top with the caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, or other toppings you like.

💡 WW tip: Using lean ground beef, light buns, reduced-fat cheese, and only 1 tbsp butter significantly reduces the Points compared with the original recipe.
